About Anne MICHAUX
Anne Michaux was born in 1971 in Luxembourg and lives and works in Berlin. She builds models with different materials and objects, predominantly little toy figures, old toy cars, cuts out photography, combined with wood, plastics, sand and whatever materials that she finds. The models she builds, she then uses for photography. The resulting picture is the actual work. She destroys the model after she has made a picture she is satisfied with.She creates worlds that reflect upon an theme that is preoccupying her or is in the news or that she finds interesting for whatever reason. A lot of her works depict a world that has shifted out of the comfort zone into a zone where our beliefs and securities don’t count for much anymore. Recently she has worked a lot with underlying narrative. The pictures are then part of a story she imagines, like left over pictures of a bigger whole, where the viewer can fill in the gaps, imagine what happens « in between ». The building of these miniature worlds allows her to model her reality exactly the way she wishes it to be seen. The lightening of a picture, the colors, and the size and material on which she choses to print them plays also an important part.

« Die Motive meiner Fotos sind kleine Fantasiewelten, kleinschalige Modelle die ich aus diversen Materialien baue. Dazu benutze ich altes Modellbahnzubehör, Pappe, Sand, Spielzeug und alle möglichen Sachen die ich irgendwo finde und zweckentfremde. Ausgangspunkt für die Modelle ist oft eine Idee über eine gewisse Stimmung, über einen bestimmten Moment der die Essenz einer Geschichte in einem Bild erzählen soll. Es sind eine Art “Filmstills” , die aus ihrem Kontext genommen wurden und um die der Betrachter sich seine eigene Geschichte ausdenken kann. In letzter Zeit hat sich der Gedanke der Narrative verstärkt und distilliere ich eine Idee über mehrere Bilder, die als Fragmente eine längere Geschichte andeuten und im Fall von “Exodus Zwei” auch mit kurzen Textfragmenten versehen sind. In meinen ersten Arbeiten war ich noch stark von einem bestimmten Science Fiction Genre inspiriert, der sich nicht mit fremden Welten sondern mit Zukunfstvisionen beschäftigt, mittlerweile interessieren mich alternative Realitäten und Bilder die abseits der Mitte hätten enstehen können, Randnotizen der Gesellschaft, das Ungezeigte, das erstmal Uninteressante. Es geht mir darum eine Bilderwelt zu schaffen, die einerseits “schön anzusehen” ist und andererseits ein leichtes Unbehagen auslöst und nach einem zweiten Blick fragt. »
